Mebendazole was originally developed in the late 1960s and became available for human use in the early 1970s. It belongs to a family of anti-parasitic medicines known as benzimidazoles, which also includes drugs like albendazole and flubendazole. For decades, it has been commonly used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infections in both humans and animals, including pinworms, tapeworms, roundworms, and other similar parasites.

More recently, researchers have started exploring mebendazole for its possible anti-cancer potential. Early laboratory studies suggest that it may work by interfering with how cancer cells absorb and use nutrients like glucose, which can slow their growth and eventually cause the cells to die.
